Qatari foreign minister, Iranian counterpart met in Doha

Qatar welcomed on Saturday an agreement between the US and Iran to resume talks under Omani mediation to reach a deal on Tehran's nuclear program.

The Foreign Ministry said Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani met Saturday with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, in the capital of Doha to discuss relations “and ways to support and strengthen them.”

They also discussed developments in the Gaza Strip and occupied Palestinian territories, in addition to several regional and international issues of common interest, it said.

Al Thani, who also serves as prime minister, expressed Qatar's welcoming “of the agreement between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran to resume talks within the framework of Omani mediation aimed at reaching a fair, lasting, and binding agreement that would enhance security, stability, and peace in the region and open new horizons for regional cooperation and dialogue.”

Before arriving in Doha, Araghchi held talks in Jeddah with his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, to discuss regional developments and efforts to address them, according to a statement from the Saudi Foreign Ministry.

Araghchi's meetings come ahead of US President Donald Trump's regional tour beginning Tuesday, which includes stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Several rounds of indirect negotiations have already taken place between Tehran and Washington. The first was held April 12 in Oman, followed by rounds in Rome and again in Oman, during which Iran and the US announced progress in the talks.

The fourth round was initially scheduled for May 3 in Rome but was postponed due to logistical reasons. It is set to be held Sunday in the Omani capital of Muscat.
