Benjamin Netanyahu to have prostate removed, says Prime Minister's Office

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to undergo prostate surgery Sunday due to a urinary tract infection, according to the Prime Minister's Office.

The office gave no details about the 75-year-old Israeli prime minister's current condition.

Netanyahu was examined Wednesday at the Hadassah Hospital in West Jerusalem, where he was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), according to a statement.

It noted that Netanyahu has been undergoing antibiotic treatment since his examination.

He had another surgery earlier this year for a hernia and had a pacemaker fitted in 2023.

The announcement came following the country's military raid on one of the last functioning hospitals in the northern Gaza Strip, which saw soldiers arresting its director.

Netanyahu is Israel's longest-serving prime minister.

Despite the upcoming surgery, a weekly Cabinet meeting, usually held late Sunday evenings, will not be canceled.
