High school students from 23 schools across Türkiye gathered at the "Alem-i Islam Workshop" to tackle critical challenges faced by oppressed regions worldwide. Organized under the theme of addressing injustices and seeking solutions, the two-day event featured discussions divided into seven regional committees, including Africa, Palestine, East Turkestan, and the Balkans.

The Africa Muslims Committee, led by Sara Garip, a student at Başakşehir Şehit Haki Aras Imam-Hatip High School, explored instability stemming from colonialism and missionary activities while proposing solutions to sociopolitical and economic crises. The workshop highlighted Türkiye’s efforts to strengthen ties with African nations, including educational and humanitarian initiatives.

In an interview, Sara Garip spoke about the committee's objectives and the challenges faced by Africa:

What are the main objectives of the Africa Muslims Committee in this workshop?

"Our committee’s inclusion sends a powerful message. It signifies recognition of the challenges in Africa and the beginning of efforts to raise awareness. Our primary goal is to advocate for Africa on the international stage, safeguard its rights, and ensure the youth acknowledge the plight of Africa and work toward solutions. We also aim to identify the historical events that hindered the spread of Islam in Africa and remind everyone of their responsibility to prevent such events from recurring."

What concrete steps are planned to raise societal awareness about Africa following the workshop?

"I believe and hope that by the end of this workshop, a seed of Africa has been planted in the heart of every delegate. The academic proposals and discussions we presented aim to foster empathy among the delegates and heighten their sensitivity to standing against oppression and injustice."

In your opinion, what are the biggest current challenges faced by Islamic societies in Africa?

"One major issue is Islamophobia, which affects Africa and other Muslim nations globally. Another significant issue is racism. Together, Islamophobia and racism make Africa’s situation more difficult compared to other Islamic states. Additionally, misinformation in the media increases prejudice and misguides public perceptions. These challenges must be addressed to alleviate Africa’s struggles."

What are your thoughts on Türkiye’s religious and cultural ties with African countries?

"I hope Türkiye’s ties with all Muslim countries, including Africa, grow stronger. The collapse of Africa would signify not only the downfall of the Islamic world but also a loss for humanity. Türkiye provides vital economic aid to Africa, funds mosques, and supports educational initiatives for African Muslims. These efforts are crucial for fostering solidarity."

Was there any information or experience during the workshop that particularly impacted or surprised you?

"What impacted me most were the solutions presented by a delegate during one of the sessions. It made me realize how meaningful this event was, as it addressed critical issues with thoughtful insights from students who took the matter seriously. Additionally, I was inspired by the support we received from elders who approached us with hope and encouragement. This gave me a profound sense of responsibility and made me very optimistic about the dedication of my peers."

The Palestine Committee focused on issues such as human rights violations by Israel, the influence of evangelicalism, and the deepening crisis in the region. The East Turkestan Committee examined the ongoing genocide, China’s oppressive policies, and Türkiye’s solidarity efforts.

The workshop concluded with a sense of shared responsibility and hope, as students pledged to act as advocates for justice and uplift the oppressed regions they studied.
