Chancellor Merz convenes an urgent Security Cabinet meeting after US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites, Berlin says it will closely coordinate further steps with EU partners and Trump administration

Germany on Sunday called on Iran to "immediately" begin negotiations with the US and Israel for a diplomatic solution after American warplanes struck its nuclear sites.

A German government spokesman announced that Germany's Security Cabinet convened Sunday morning under Chancellor Friedrich Merz's leadership to evaluate the latest developments after the US carried out airstrikes targeting Iran's key nuclear facilities.

“Chancellor Friedrich Merz reiterates his call for Iran to immediately begin negotiations with the US and Israel and to reach a diplomatic solution to the conflict,” spokesman Stefan Kornelius said in a statement.

"The Chancellor and security cabinet ministers will coordinate closely with their European Union and US partners throughout the day," he added.

Kornelius noted that initial assessments showed significant damage to Iran's nuclear program from the airstrikes, though a detailed evaluation would follow later.
