The Sudanese army announced Sunday that seven civilians from a single family were killed and seven others injured following artillery shelling by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state in western Sudan.

According to a statement by the army's Sixth Infantry Division in El Fasher, "The RSF militia shelled neighborhoods of El Fasher with artillery on Saturday, resulting in the martyrdom of an entire family of seven people, including a five-year-old girl."

The attack also injured "seven other civilians, including a woman and a medical worker, who sustained serious injuries and were transported to hospitals for treatment," the army added.

The army affirmed that "the situation in El Fasher is under control," noting that the army forces and their allies are operating in full coordination and that "not an inch of the city will be surrendered."

The RSF did not immediately comment on the army's statement. However, the group has been conducting artillery bombardments on El Fasher for days, resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries, according to Sudanese authorities.

El-Fasher has seen deadly clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF since May 2024, despite international warnings over the risks of fighting in the city, which serves as a hub for humanitarian operations in all five Darfur states.

Since April 15, 2023, the RSF has been battling the Sudanese army forces for control of the country, resulting in thousands of deaths and one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

More than 20,000 people have been killed so far, and 15 million others displaced, according to the UN and local authorities. Research from US scholars, however, estimates the death toll at around 130,000.
