North Macedonia declared 7-day mourning period after fire killed at least 59 people
Three victims who were critically injured in a nightclub fire in North Macedonia were airlifted Thursday to Istanbul on a medical evacuation plane by the Turkish Health Ministry.
The plane departed Skopje Airport and landed at the Sabiha Gokcen Airport in Istanbul. The victims were then taken by ambulance to the Burn Center at Basaksehir Cam and Sakura City Hospital for treatment.
North Macedonia has declared a seven-day national mourning period following the devastating fire in the eastern city of Kocani that claimed at least 59 lives.
The fire broke out Sunday around 3 a.m. local time (0200GMT), reportedly triggered by pyrotechnic effects that set the nightclub's ceiling ablaze.
As flames spread to the walls and smoke filled the venue, the roughly 500 people who were in the club at the time rushed toward the single exit, causing a deadly stampede.
