Death of journalist Fatima Hassouna confirmed weeks after strike on her home

Two Palestinian journalists were killed in Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, the Gaza Media Office announced Monday.

Abdel Rahman Al-Abadleh worked with Al-Nahar News Agency and other outlets, the office said in a statement.

No other details were provided on the time or location of his death.

The office also confirmed the death of photojournalist Fatima Hassouna, who was killed along with 10 family members in an airstrike on their home in the Al-Tuffah neighborhood of Gaza City on April 16.

Hassouna worked with the local platform Untold Palestine and the US-based outlet Mondoweiss and was killed just one day after she found out that a documentary about her life in Gaza was to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, the office noted.

It remains unclear why her death was only officially announced weeks later.

The latest fatalities brought the number of journalists killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since October 2023 to 219, according to the office.

The Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive against Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 53,500 Palestinians, most of them women and children.

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
