Minangkabau ethnic group living in highlands of West Sumatra, Indonesia, is the largest matricentric society in the world

The historical origin of this unusual society can only be found in a legend: King Maharajo Dirajo, founder of the Kingdom of Koto Batu, died in the 12th century. After the king's death, his wife, who was alone with three children, took responsibility for the kingdom's administration and initiated the matriarchal society.

According to BBC's story; all properties of the ancestors are inherited by the daughters in this unique and complicated society. Children take their mother's surname, men move to the women's houses and they are regarded as guests in these houses.

Minangs firstly worship nature since they are traditionally animistic. Hinduism and Buddhism, which came from India, influenced this interesting society after animism. They have also surprisingly embraced Islam which is a paternalistic religion lastly.

Men move to their wife's home although it is improper in Islam. The community also adheres to the dowry tradition and it is designated by the family of the bride.

The groom is picked from his home and brought to the bride's home. Then the marriage is performed in accordance with Islamic rules. The men and women dance with their traditional music to welcome the groom. The bride's family, dressed in traditional clothing, carries presents, money and food on their heads to give to the groom.

Minang women receive social and economic privileges when they get married. The family's wealth is administered by the oldest woman. They bear a significant role in solving problems, marriage matters and ceremonies.

Aside from the women, men also have some responsibilities; they have to earn money and afford to provide for the children's necessities. Therefore, most men leave the village to find a job and visit their homes once in a while.

Minangs continue to sustain their custom and resist against the time, although the fall of this matrilineal community has been expected for quite a while.

The black, red and yellow flag of Minangkabou represents three features of the community; rebelliousness, bravery, and origin of culture and custom
