Russia has asked Kyrgyzstan to allow it to open its second military base in southern part of the country, said Kyrgyz government officials.
A senior Kyrgyz official, on condition of anonymity, said that Russia's move is part of its efforts to restore influence in the region. "Russia voiced this request itself,” said the official.
Kyrgyzstan attempted to close down the key US military base in the country which sits on a strategic route for delivery of troops and equipments en route to Afghanistan. The Central Asian country gave up the idea after negotiations between US and Kyrgyz authorities.
