More than 17,000 hectares believed to be affected, estimated financial damage caused by heavy rains at over $3M, says Krasnoyarsk's first vice-governor

Russia early Thursday announced that a state of emergency will be implemented in its Siberian region of Krasnoyarsk due to heavy rains that have damaged crops.

Sergey Ponomarenko, first vice-governor of the Krasnoyarsk region, said on Telegram that the decision was made during a meeting of the regional government, with the preliminary volume of crops damaged at more than 17,000 hectares.

Ponomarenko added that the estimated financial damage caused by the heavy rains is over 280 million Russian rubles ($3 million).

The introduction of a state of emergency on Friday will allow the involvement of local authorities and resources to address the situation in the region, he said.

Earlier this month, Tomsk Governor Vladimir Mazur said that a state of emergency had been declared in the Siberian region over bad weather conditions that destroyed almost 3,000 hectares of crops.
