Blast likely caused by 2 hand grenades, says police chief

The Danish police confirmed that at least three young Swedish nationals were taken into custody after a blast near the Israeli Embassy on early Wednesday.

"Two explosions occurred at 3:20 a.m. at the Israeli embassy. It is our preliminary assessment that it was due to two hand grenades," Jens Jespersen of Copenhagen police told a press conference.

He said that two of the suspects were apprehended on a train at Copenhagen's main railway station, while the third was detained in another part of the capital, adding that the police cannot declare that the embassy was the target of the explosion.

"We can't say for sure if the embassy has been or not been the target of these explosions … We are also investigating if they have acted alone, on request or together with others," Jespersen said.

The police representative confirmed that two of the detainees would be charged with illegal possession of weapons, but he declined to comment on the question of whether the three suspects, aged between 15-20, were connected to the explosion case.

The incident occurred in the Danish capital's Hellerup area, which also hosts the foreign missions of Türkiye, Iran, Thailand, and Romania, all within close proximity of each other.
