ENT specialist says upper respiratory tract infections, flu can cause problems during winter
Cautioning those going for rhinoplasty surgery, a Turkish physician warned that upper respiratory tract infections and flu can cause problems before and after surgery.
“Upper respiratory tract infections and flu infections are a concern during the winter months. Conditions such as sore throat, fever, body malaise, inflamed nasal discharge or herpes around the mouth and nose may require the postponement of the operation,” said Dr. Erkan Soylu, an ear, nose, and throat specialist at Istanbul’s Medipol Mega University hospital.
Noting that there were seasonal advantages and disadvantages in rhinoplasty, he said: “Patients who have made an appointment for surgery during the winter should be careful about upper respiratory tract infections before the surgery. Contact with sick people, and crowded and public places should be avoided as much as possible for 10 days before surgery.”
Soylu advised that surgery should be delayed or canceled due to a flu infection.
Saying that nose surgeries are usually not painful, he said the most common complaint of patients after nose surgeries is nasal congestion.
“In case of a post-operative flu infection, there is no need for any medication other than the medication given after surgery unless there is an extra complication. Fever up to 38 degrees (Celsius or 100.4 Fahrenheit) may occur due to inflammation, especially in the first three days after surgery. However, in case of fever exceeding 38 degrees, patients should contact their doctor,” he said.
