A Muslim woman broke her fast during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan to donate blood to a Hindu patient, saving his life and giving humanity an important message of solidarity amid the unrest of a divided and battered Indian society.

The condition of Vijay Kumar Rastogi, who was fighting for his life in a hospital in Uttar Pradesh, suddenly worsened and he was in urgent need of a 0-positive blood donor. However, finding that specific blood type was proving very difficult and the hospital had spared no effort as it combed through blood banks, according to NDTV, an India-based news channel.

Alisha Khan, a Muslim woman who is 0-positive, heard about Rastogi’s condition through a contact and decided to lend a hand—or a few veins-- to help him. The Muslim woman broke her fast and immediately rushed to the hospital to donate blood.

People flocked to social media following Khan’s act of kindness and expressed their wish to see Indians standing in solidarity with each other more often, whether they be Muslim or Hindu.

“Thank you to Khan, thank you to everyone spreading goodness and humanity in India,” one user wrote.

Mr. Rastogi has reportedly improved following the blood transfusion amid hopes that his situation will be exemplary to the perpetual battle between Indians and Muslims.
