A Turkish company is producing antibacterial coffins specifically designed for victims of the coronavirus epidemic, exporting them to at least 16 countries such as the U.S., Germany, Italy and Spain, which are worst-hit by the virus.

The disposable coffins are produced in northern Turkey by using lead coating on steel and prevents transmission of the virus to the soil when the body is buried.

“Our company produces morgue, autopsy, cadaver and anatomy equipment in Turkey. With the outbreak of the Covid-19, we started manufacturing antibacterial lead-coated coffins specifically for coronavirus deaths. These coffins are completely antibacterial and prevent any transmission of the virus to soil,” said company president, Volkan Yılmaz.

“We sell these caskets to almost all municipalities and local institutions as well as abroad, to countries where the death toll is very high. Sixteen countries, primarily America, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and Germany have put in orders so far,” he added.

The coffins cost between 350 to 400 dollars each.

Since the virus emerged last December in the Chinese city of Wuhan, it has spread to at least 185 countries and regions.

There are more than 2.06 million confirmed infections globally and over 137,100 deaths, according to the U.S.-based Johns Hopkins University, while the recoveries have so far exceeded 517,500.
