Turkish ruling AK Party will hold an extraordinary congress to elect the party's next leader on May 22, officials say
An extraordinary congress of Turkish ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party will be held on May 22, the party announced on Thursday.
The announcement came after a Central Executive Board meeting of the party in Ankara chaired by Prime Minister Ahmet Davuoğlu.
Davutoğlu is expected to hold a press conference after the meeting.
Senior Party officials said that Davutoğlu would not run for the leadership at the congress.
The announcement of the congress and Davutoglu's suspension from party leadership came following a critical meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Wednesday evening.
