Turkey's Cavusoglu says Shinzo Abe significantly contributed to bilateral ties between Turkey, Japan

The Turkish foreign minister on Friday expressed sorrow at the resignation of the Japanese prime minister due to health issues.

In a Twitter post, Mevlut Cavusoglu said Shinzo Abe made a great contribution in the sense of improving diplomatic ties between Turkey and Japan.

Cavusoglu thanked Abe for his efforts in this regard and wished him recovery.

Earlier, the 65-year-old Japanese premier announced his resignation due to health concerns, saying: "I have decided to step down as prime minister as poor health should not lead to wrong political decision."

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) will hold a poll of selected members of the party for the post.
