Covid-19 can linger on cosmetic products for 4-5 hours, warns Turkish professor

Many women are aware of the fact that certain beauty products, such as makeup brushes and sponges, are a breeding ground for bacteria. However, experts recommend taking more precautions in the age of Covid-19 to reduce the risk of contracting the virus.

“It is certainly risky to share makeup under the current circumstances due to Covid-19. If a beauty product is used by several customers, it could linger on these products for 4 to 5 hours, resulting in potentially contracting the virus” Mehmet Ceyhan, a professor at Ankara-based Hacettepe University told Demirören News Agency, warning people before they visit beauty shops and salons.

The Turkish expert pointed out that cosmetic products used, particularly those applied to the eyes and lips, pose a greater risk in spreading COVID-19.

“Communal makeup testers should not be used as we have to avoid sharing objects that people can physically touch. All of the products that are used in the beauty salons should be sterilized and disposable.” Ceyhan said.

A great deal of beauty chains have started to suspend in-store sampling of beauty products.
