Turkish Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) granted electricity generation license to Akkuyu Nuclear Co. for a period of 49 years for its Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant project in southern Turkish province of Mersin, a statement said on Thursday.
EMRA announced that the electricity generation license will be valid beginning from June 15, 2017.
The Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant will have 4,800 megawatts capacity in four units and working life-time for 8,000 hours per year.
The plant is estimated to meet around 6-7 percent of Turkey's electricity demand.
"Although the first unit of the power plant is planned to be operational in 2025, Akkuyu Nuclear Co. announced that it will start generating electricity on October 29, 2023 on the centennial anniversary of Turkish Republic," the statement said.
