Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called for a reform of the UN on Friday to revitalize its activities and restore its international reputation.
Tokayev emphasized the need for international organizations to adapt to new global realities.
"We cannot address contemporary challenges without a comprehensive reform of the Security Council. This is urgently needed and aligns with the interests of the vast majority of humanity. I firmly believe that the voices of middle powers and all developing countries must be strengthened and clearly heard in the Council," he stressed at the Yusof Ishak Institute, a research institution in Singapore.
Tokayev said humanity is facing multiple crises, including geopolitical tensions, macroeconomic difficulties, climate change, a deteriorating global security architecture and increasing distrust among major powers.
"Global military spending reached a record $2.2 trillion last year, leading to a new arms race. Despite all efforts, humanity is falling victim to new military conflicts. Issues related to extremism and terrorism, cyber threats, space security, artificial intelligence, climate change, large-scale migration and pandemics are further undermining global security," he said.
Tokayev argued that countries like Kazakhstan and Singapore, as developing middle powers, cannot accept polarization and division, given the high stakes. He urged proactive measures to prevent a new Cold War.
Highlighting Kazakhstan's foreign policy, Tokayev reiterated his nation's commitment to globalization. He affirmed that Kazakhstan will remain open and connected to the world, while proactively addressing global challenges.
"Sometimes our stance is met with skepticism and criticized for its neutrality. However, neutrality should not be confused with a lack of conviction. On the contrary, it is a deliberate choice in favor of diplomacy and dialogue over conflict and coercion. This choice is our strength, allowing us to help bridge deep divides," he said.
Tokayev also praised Singapore's significant role, noting that its financial and economic influence, strategic location on key international shipping routes and its high ranking in the Global Firepower 2024 survey, demonstrate the nation's substantial influence.
