A group of Searching Mothers looking for family members who were victims of forced disappearance in Mexico, found a massive burial site with human remains and a "clandestine crematorium" in Mexico City.

Ceci Flores, leader of the Searching Mothers chapter in Sonora in northwestern Mexico, headed the expedition Tuesday and told followers about the grim discovery on X.

"We just found this clandestine crematorium. Apparently, they have been burning bodies here for a long time," wrote Flores.

Flores, who has been looking for her two sons who were allegedly taken by organized crime gangs since 2015, and the searching mothers, have been working on the site for two days before coming across the remains.

"We are hopeful that with the technology that the authorities have, they can do something to locate what is left of some of the people here, some of which remains that they can analyze," said Flores.

She and her chapter work mainly in the northwest of Mexico. It is their first expedition in the capital and their first find in the central region.

"It breaks my soul to find around that scene so many children's and women's clothes, to imagine that this could have been their fate and to think that those ashes will probably never be able to tell us who they are," she said.

Voting IDs and children's notebooks were found.

The Mexico City Attorney General's Office began a formal investigation into the discovery in an abandoned lot in the south of the city. Prosecutors announced the deployment of forensic officers and police to interview witnesses.

"Out of respect for families searching for their loved ones, we will provide further details once the nature of the findings is confirmed," prosecutors wrote on X.
