Ties between Azerbaijan and Iran will be bolstered thanks to a new transport corridor to be established between the two countries, according to an Iranian official.

Speaking exclusively to Trend News Agency on the sidelines of the 15th meeting of the State Commission on Cooperation in Economic, Trade, and Humanitarian Spheres held in Baku, Director General of the Protocol Department of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mehdi Honardust stressed that the cornerstone of Iran's foreign policy is developing relations with regional countries.

After the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed on establishing new communication links between the East Zangazur economic region and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic through the territory of Iran.

Iran's new government, which came to power in August 2021, has made it a priority to strengthen ties with neighboring countries in many fields, especially in the economic sphere.

"Iran is committed to making greater efforts to strengthen economic, political, and security relations with Azerbaijan," he concluded, adding that the two countries are interested in developing relations in various areas, including transit, energy, agriculture, industry, and other fields.
