Ramazan Sarıkaya, who went to the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality building in Saraçhane to resist the putscists on the July 15 coup attempt, was wounded in the groin upon the gunshot of the putschists and was taken to a hospital. Sarıkaya, who had two separate surgical operations, fell a martyr in the Haseki Hospital he was taken to, after 1 month of struggle.
Sarıkaya was originally from Malatya and was a father of four. The martyr’s son, Talha Sarıkaya stated, “I hope we will be awarded with martyrdom like him. I hope our death too will be as his. I don’t feel any sorrow, I am happy. He met the most beautiful way to die.”
Telling of how his father went to Saraçhane, Sarıkaya stated, “He was shot by a soldier. He was shot with bullets in his body. One to his groin, and one to his bowels. He was taken to the hospital by a charitable person around. He was operated on there. The operation was succesful. And, he had regained his consciousness. We were visiting him. Then, he was taken into the intensive care unit. He stayed there for a month. Then, he had multiple organ failures. In the end, he died of a heart attack.”
Martyr Ramazan Sarıkaya was buried in the Edirnekapı Martyr Cemetery along with the people chanting allahuekber, after his funeral prayer held at the Fatih Mosque.
The 52-year-old martyr Ramazan Sarıkaya’s name was given to the Education Center of Malatya Metropolitan Municipality, and to an Imam Hatip middle school in Avcılar, İstanbul.
