Fahrettin Yavuz, who rushed to TRT in Harbiye when he heard the fake coup statement on TV, on July 15, was shot in the head and martyred. Yavuz, who protested against the putschists chanting, “İstanbul get up and defend your country!” had two children: Mahmut (10) and Ali (5).
“I have two motherlands; one is Mauritania, and the other is Turkey”
The martyr’s wife Meryem Yavuz, originally from Mauritania, said, “I am proud that my husband fell a martyr for his country.” Yavuz stated, “When my husband fell a martyr, it was our 10th wedding anniversary, and I lost him on that precious day for the sake of the country. I have two nations; one is Mauritania, and the other is Turkey. My husband fought against the putschists in order to protect the country’s unity. That’s why keeping the putschist in prisons even for a day is an insult to the martyrs’ wives and children. That’s why I want the putschists to be executed.”
He left quickly saying, ‘It’s a matter of nation’
Meryem Yavuz, who stated that they heard about the coup attempt from TV, also stated, “My husband immediately reacted, and wanted to get out. But I got worried, when I saw men with guns. My two children in my mind, I told him not to get out, but he said it was a matter of nation and left quickly.”
Yavuz, who stated that her husband didn’t answer her calls in the following hours, stated, “I couldn’t hear from my husband for a long time. Towards the morning, my husband’s brother called me and told me that my husband had been shot in the head. I didn’t know what to do, at that moment. But I am sure that my wife fell a martyr without any fear in his heart for this beautiful country. And, we will carry this honor for a lifetime.”
The 34-year-old Fahrettin Yavuz, who defended his country bravely against the putschists, was buried in his family cemetery in Eyüp, after his funeral prayer was held in the Mecidiyeköy Central Mosque.
The martyr’s name was given to an Imam Hatip middle school in Trabzon, and a primary school in Mecidiyeköy, İstanbul where he was martyred.
